The inception of the Alicedale Karate Project can be directly attributed to the excitement and enthusiasm generated by Sensei Liviu Crisan, President of the World Union of Karate Federations (WUKF), and his Romanian Karate Team during their visit to Alicedale in 2013.
After their visit, communication continued between Gary Grapentin and key members of the Alicedale community in order to establish a sustainable karate dojo in Alicedale. In 2014 ECSR formed an Alicedale Karate Project Committee which included Prof. James Gambiza, Prof. Alan Kirkaldy, Dr Deyi Mbleani and Sensei Zwelakhe Sinam.
The Project proudly carries the endorsement of the Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University, Dr Sizwe Mabizela. Alicedale community members involved in the Project included Mr Bongani Bavuma, Mr John Bateson, Ms Eli Konstant and Mrs Sybel Petersen. In February 2015 these collaborative efforts were finally rewarded and the first karate classes commenced in Alicedale.
To date the Alicedale Karate Project has largely been funded by members and families of ECSR as well as a number of additional private donors. Mrs Ronel Mostert of Siyakubonga Funeral Service has been also been a generous donor to the Project, having regularly sponsored a driver, vehicle and fuel to ensure that the instructor is transported to Alicedale on a weekly basis for classes. Another huge boost for the Project was the donation of a motorcycle by Mr Bev Cummings and Mrs Anne Cummings to further assist the instructor in reaching Alicedale. At R800 per year, members of the public and the local business community may sponsor an Alicedale child in the practice of karate. This includes tuition, grading and affiliation fees. In addition each child will be provided with a karate suite, and will also have the opportunity to compete in ECSR/USR organised seminars and championships.
For more information about funding an Alicedale child please contact Gary Grapentin.
Alicedale, 15:30 – 16:30, Mon: Zwelakhe Sinam
Zwelakhe holds the grade of sandan which he achieved in 2013. He is the head-instructor of the Alicedale Karate Project and an assistant instructor at East Cape Shotokan-Ryu. His practice of karate is based on the budo way, and this, in conjunction with his excellent understanding of kihon, allows for him to generate tremendous power in his techniques. Although greatly respected by the Alicedale and ECSR karateka, he is notorious for his gruelling classes. Zwelakhe is a founder member of United Shotokan-Ryu (USR).
