Western Suburbs Karate Club

St Francis Xavier Church Hall, Jade Street, Morningside Port Elizabeth

In this day and age with criminal behaviour being so rife, it is essential to able to protect oneself from intimidation and injury. In this regard we believe that the training we provide gives the karate student the necessary tools to either avoid or defend against this type of behaviour.

In doing this we promote fitness and sport karate which heightens the senses and improves concentration, discipline, speed and strength.

We believe Karate is a family activity which can improve relationships between family members and especially when parents participate. We welcome anyone from the age of 6 years old and up.  We look forward to a call from you to chat about starting at your earliest convenience.

Nick Koutsouvelis

Western Suburbs Head Instructor

In 2001 Nick decided to give karate a try after his son and daughter joined Quinton Fourie’s dojo. Ultimately he enjoyed the training so much, that he continued long after his children had stopped.

Nick achieved his shodan (1st dan) in 2007 and after a year, was forced into a sabbatical due to work pressures. Nick resumed his training in 2012, and under the guidance of Sensei Kenny Tawse he achieved his nidan (2nd dan) in 2013.  Nick is now the caretaker of the Western Suburbs Karate Club, and intends to continue the dojo’s legacy as one of the oldest in Port Elizabeth. Nick is a founder member of United Shotokan-Ryu (USR) and currently serves as their Secretary.
